“at the end, I’m still a romantic”

Interview to Carlos Huerta (Mallorca)

Carlos is a well-known bonsai artist, as we are going to verify in these lines. However, it will be very difficult to describe him so we decided to propose him an interview to know more about this amazing “ullastre”.

Spain Bonsái (SB).  How did you find this tree?
-Carlos Huertas (CH). It was a day walking around the mountain with some friends.
SB. What really catch your attention on this one?
-CH.  The dramatic aspect of the trunk, with so many curves and dry firewood, they made me stop, clean the zone of stones, branches and clear the excess of green stuff, to be able to see the entire trunk which is the true protagonist.

SB.  Did you imagine from the first moment that this would be one of the “ullastres” more admired of the moment?
-CH.  Yes, seeing the forms and features that it had, we knew immediately that this tree had potential.
SB.  Presenting this bonsai to a contest with so little time, was not to assume too much risk?
-CH.  Yes, but for me the most important thing was to participate in a prestigious contest, so I thought I had nothing to lose.
SB. Very few trees worked in Literati style can accredit to have arrived so far. In this case, do you believe that the style has been determinant or secondary?
-CH.  I believe that has been the most important part.

SB.  I guess this bonsai has attracted a lot of attention from everywhere, hasn’t it?
-CH.  Yes, it has. From Spain and other foreign countries they have offered me a lot of money and other very tempting things, but I have decided to keep it with me, surprising  some people, ”at the end, I’m still a romantic”.
SB.  In this so materialized society, ¿ do you believe there are emotions that by itself no price can be put on it?
-CH.  Without any doubt, this tree is capable of transmitting very good vibrations, is a tree that speaks by itself and that is very enriching.
SB. In a daily relation, which is the most important contribution that this tree gives you?
-CH.  It gives me a variety of sensations: calm, relaxation, peace, order, tranquillity…
SB.  If you had to summarize in a phrase what this tree signifies, which would be?
-CH.  When my friends come to visit me, they always ask by "sa pesa*", or what is equal: the piece.
*in mallorcain language “the piece”

SB.  It is exciting to have a piece of living nature so close, ¿but what is what weighs more: the pleasure to have a magnificent tree or the fear to lose it.
-CH.  What I like the most is to have a symbolic tree in my collection and be recognized by it, even if my participation is small, only a 10%. The most important part is nature merits.
SB.  About the other trees in your collection, are they jealous?
-CH.  No, they take it very well; each one has its own place.
SB. The growing and modelling work is an opportunity to enjoy, but also are the recognitions. Carlos, what prizes has you obtained with this tree?
- CH. To date, I have participated in the First International Contest Mistral Bonsai  "Prize Olea", obtaining 2nd Prize.
