Why the ullastre? What have they in special? I and some other bonsai enthusiasts have done ourselves this question many times. In my personal, case the answer this very clear, simply they are special.
Each ullastre is singular, different and unrepeatable, that is the main quality that hoards these trees. The fact of be yamadoris, is something that characterizes them. Is impossible to create an ullastre with another procedure, that of their recovery in the mountain, where they have grown and have been formed with the past of the years.

Their rug bark and done up, their sinuous forms, their dead wood and their tiny leaf confer some signs of unmistakable identity that can provide us all a world of possibilities with a view toward their formation as bonsai. The years past in the mountain, the climatology and its difficult living conditions have made these trees become small works of art that we should know and appreciate. |
We can find ullastres only at the Balearic Islands and generally in high elevations in the mountain. Its raid in the world of the bonsai has been slow but progressive and of an exceptional wealth and a valuable contribution to the Spanish bonsai. I only regret do not to have access to them before. Mostly trees from Japan have always composed my collection. I should recognize that from time to time my anxiety and stubbornness by wanted to possess and cultivate Japanese species of difficult adaptation and maintenance in my environment and habitat, have supposed small deceptions and wastes of time and work. |
|
That it is why for 3 or 4 years I have increased my ullastres and olives in general, by its good performance and versatility, its generosity and answer as bonsais in formation is so large and at the same time so sure that each time I convince me that my dedication to the bonsai will be mainly for them.
With the time, the ullastre becomes more and more availed as a bonsai, by enthusiasts, professionals, and teachers of our country. They have neither passed unnoticed out of our borders and especially in Japan, the admiration of some Japanese teachers that passed through diverse acts and demonstrations in the Balearic Islands and in Spain main continent. This does not do more than increasing the good reputation that little by little these small trees have earned themselves. Is doubtless that all this has been thanks to the contribution and tenacity of some bonsai enthusiasts and professionals from the Balearic Islands and from Spain. |
As it is natural, the ullastre has built a market some times closed and complex. Is natural placement in the Islands Balearic islands, its condition of yamadori, its quality for cultivation, have made from the ullastre a bonsai of difficult access for any fan. Today, who want to possess an ullastre of certain quality must pay for it. If to this we unite the fact that each year is more and more difficult to find a god yamadori tree in the mountain, we have the necessary ingredients so that in a few years be a material that only will be able to arrive a few. In this matter is very important that the privileged ones who lives in the islands and have in its hands the future of the ullastres as a bonsai, negotiate with wisdom and in its just measure its recovery and its sale if it is the case. |

I also believe that is not a question to devastate the mountain, therefore, I believe that for all there is a measure and an ethics. We must be attentive for next years, and above all only struggles and to persist for those trees that mark the difference and gather the conditions that fill our expectations. The consolidation of the ullastre as a bonsai is a fact in which at less for me there are any doubts.
