The “ullastre” from less to but |
By Santi Galán
Mallorca
Call also olive tree, or “acebuche”, is a millenarian tree that normally lives in small altitude places on the sea level, around the Mediterranean sea. In Majorca, we found some trees living on the 1000 mts of altitude, maximum. It is in these places of the mountain range of Tramuntana where the best units to use in bonsai appear. Because the snows and frosts of the winter and the extreme drought of the summer, cracks and ages their trunks of a way only the nature can obtain. These trees are also grass of goats that live in the mountain, which eat the tier buds year after year, forcing the tree to adopt forms that would not have if it were not within reach of those animals. The goats also eat part of the tender crust, which aid to obtain those trunks with these kinds of curves and those parts of dry firewood carved by the climatology through veins of their hardest firewood.

All those qualities of “ullastres” of the mountain of Tramuntana, that at first view, would not have more importance, have been united to the movement "bonsái" that at the present time is beating so strong in all Europe, or rather anywhere in the world. In this art of bonsái where it seemed that everything was invented around the Japanese species, (without clearing no merit to them) have begun to enter perfectly valid European species, to get bonsáis of highest quality. One of those species is the “acebuche”*, elevated to its maxima expression when it is “ullastres” is tanned in the north mountain range of Majorca.

For many years (more than twenty), the Majorcan bonsai enthousiasts has work with this species, obtaining magnificent results. We must say that the “ullastre” is a plant easy to cultivate and resistant to hard waters, since most of waters of Majorca are rich in lime. We can also mention (from the point of view of the amount of work that there is to dedicate to him), that arrives a little while in the evolution from bonsái in which simply with a light clipped bonsái in perfect conditions of exhibition can be had.

These bonsai of ullastre, little by little, have been known throughout all our geography and its popularity has transferred already the borders of our country, known and recognized even by the European and Japanese masterful consecrated ones. All this height in the popularity of these trees, has turned Majorca a "place of peregrination, to which, all bonsai enthusiast, must go at least once in the life". It is a joke, but the truth is that people of our country has shown interest to see the conditions of life of ullastres in the mountain range and, for experiencing the exciting possibility of looking for some unit to recover.
In the Balearic Islands, we come developing every two years, the Trobadas de Bonsái Illes Balears, where the most beautiful units of ullastre can be observed in exhibition, among other varieties. Partners from different associations from the Balearic Islands show are bonsais with pride. Already three editions have been fulfilled and in 2007, it will be the fourth edition. This Trobada, in addition, fulfils the important social mission to reunite all the bonsai companions from the Balearic Islands, and of outside them. Are days of intense relation with bonsái, where demonstrations can be seen, to participate in workshops, etc, and mainly to chat and to share anecdotes and experiences with friends of different localities that normally only see ourselves in this occasion.

Appealing to the common sense of the people, my desire is that all this "revolution" around ullastres of Majorca, only serves to enriching the bonsai world and not culminates with an uncontrolled depredation of mountain range of Tramuntana.
It is certain that thousands of ullastres exist, but not all have the qualities to be a good of bonsai and in addition, we must think about the hundreds of years that take the nature in creating unique units. If we recover only those, that have potential and we are able to have a good relation of balance between the Mother Nature and the art of bonsái.
